06 – Salute
…in which Nagato is a chick magnet and Kunato is up to something
In Sidonia, Nagato is welcomed as a hero. Even the classmates that looked down on him before are now warm and welcoming. He and Shizuka get health checks. He’s unnaturally fine but she takes a while to recover.
Izana and Nagate visit the graves of the elite four who died and run into Midorikawa’s sister. I’ve been wondering when she’d show up again.
The speaking skulls and Kobayashi discuss Nagate and his ‘grandfather’ Saitou Hiroko with whom they all seem to have some history. We see that they deliberately turned Nagate’s insubordination into a tale of heroism to get the people on their side. The skulls, whose purpose is to guide Sidonia safely (and keep up their immortality on the way), say that they will use Nagate for that purpose but that if he becomes too troublesome, Kobayashi must dispose of him. Charming people, right?
Later, Nagate, Shizuka, Kunato and the fourth girl become full-fledged pilots. Kunato makes an overture of friendship that I do not in any way trust.
Nagate approaches Kobayashi in the midst of it all and asks why she favors him and why he heals so fast. There are no clear answers but she asks that he become one of the knights of Sidonia.
Shortly after that, Midorikawa’s sister shows up and tries to monopolize Nagate. Izana is having none of it and then there’s a weird scuffle at the end of which Shizuka ends up on a sort-of-date with him.
I don’t get what they see in him but oh, well.
A hive-type gauna is spotted and the new pilots are called to duty. We see Shizuka smilingly salute Nagate before everything fades to black. Next thing we know, Nagate is in a hospital and Shizuka is dead.
I’m going to pretend that the clumsy harem antics in this episode don’t exist and focus on the ending.
We don’t know much but the known facts are like this:
- Shizuka is dead, which is definitely a surprise but maybe the salute and fade-to-black was a sign.
2. Nagate remembers nothing of the mission but he’s being heavily criticized by both the public and his comrades.
3. Kunato is lauded for his actions and that plus an earlier scene of him plotting makes me wonder if he has something to do with Nagate’s problems.
4. Nagate was gravely injured and probably should have died but he’s walking already.
5. Izana is on Nagate’s side and that’s no surprise.
Yeah, there are more questions than answers here.
Not that good an episode overall but these last minutes are interesting.
Also, title drop!
