Blood Lad Episode 09 – Sins Of The Eye Glasses

Overview:

Episode 9 gives us some interesting new developments, one of which is so very out of the blue, and as usual, each new revelation comes with its own horde of new questions.

The focus of the story is split into two.  One is Braz and his audience with Wolf Daddy (we’ll just call him the King because holy shit that name) and the other is Fuyumi’s business with Bell’s family.

The opening scene is of a young Braz witnessing his father, the previous demon king, being killed by Wolf Daddy. In the present, Beros takes him to the guy where they meet Goyle, her superior who then takes him to the King. Sarcastic remarks are exchanged and then it’s revealed that the body of the mysterious spatial magic user that was delivered to Franken was sent by Braz and that the body itself belonged to Pantomime, one of the King’s men. We also see Franken preparing a new body for Akim based on Braz’s research.

Braz boldly says that this is him declaring war on the King. But the old guy is surprisingly chill about it in a vaguely threatening way and even gives Braz three days to present the candidate he has in mind so that Daddy can beat him up.

(I actually wrote that. Why.)

None of this exempts Braz from his punishment for breaking the law though. But he just fools Beros and escapes. Goyle finds Beros passed out in a pool of (Braz’s) blood, assumes the worst and sets out after a weakened Braz. But turns out that Goyle’s power comes from his anger so once Braz manages to diffuse that via a blend of the truth (Beros is just knocked out) and Braz’s own secret technique (ability to manipulate his own blood), he gets Goyle to calm down and discuss things over ice cream.

Yeah. Braz is good.

Liz will soon join them.

Moving on to Staz and Fuyumi now. Bell takes Staz to the Hydra’s place with the intention of lying that she and he are madly in love so that they won’t get into trouble with their mother, Neyn. But that all goes to hell because Neyn is good friends with Braz and knows of Staz. More than that, she turns out to know about Staz trying to bring Fuyumi back to life and disapproves because…she’s Fuyumi’s mother.

No, really.

Who even saw that coming?

Turns out that human world and demon world have doppelgangers and if they meet, they become one. Fuyumi’s mother and Bell’s mother were doppelgangers and met when the girls were wee kids. They promptly fused together and I assume Neyn came to the demon realm afterwards.

My big question is this: how does blonde and black hair fusing end up as cyan?

Fuyumi is naturally shocked but then Bell goes and shocks her more by saying that she may not remember any of this if she’s resurrected.

Meanwhile, Staz has a very deep thinking session on whether he’s only interested in drinking Fuyumi’s human blood or if there’s something more to it.

Thoughts:

The penultimate episode and it makes it very clear that this show is gonna end with no clear conclusion. Great.

That said, this was a pretty good episode. Braz continues to breathe awesomeness into this show with his very presence. Yeah, he’s a relentless schemer and probably has a Master’s in manipulation but you can’t deny that he makes it work. Even when the other characters seem one-dimensional or decorative, he manages to be cool as fuck.

Fuyumi’s mother is an interesting figure if only for the new information she has revealed. I assume she doesn’t want Fuyumi to be resurrected because she wants ghost demon Fuyumi to stay there? Just a guess but it does seem like she’d like to have both daughters close. The doppelganger thing came outta nowhere though.

I really hate it when a series ends, or at least seems to end, with no clear conclusion. I always think to myself: why? Why not at least make it so that the people who have watched the show have a great ending. Oh well, I guess you could always think up your own ending. Who knows there might be money to be made by doing that lol 😂

I’d say that’s what fanfiction is for 😀 No money involved though…usually.

But yeah, inconclusive endings are a pain and there are so many series like that. I’m kinda hoping Blood Lad’s ending will feel at least a little like an ending.

    • It’s a pain, isn’t it? It did lead me to picking up the source material though and keeping up with that. With one more book to go, it definitely gets an ending in the manga, and it’s a real shame that it didn’t get another run, because some of the ideas in it are really fun.

  2. Will you be watching the OVA too? It takes things forward a little bit more and introduces a group of new characters.

I just kind of wish this show had been given a second season or I would have even settled for a movie just to wrap some of the loose ends up. I had a lot of fun watching the show, and I’ve had a lot of fun following your thoughts on it, but it does just end rather abruptly.

I just finished episode 10 and yup, abrupt sounds right. All the major plot threads are left unresolved. Instead, we have two more main players added to the mix.

It’s been fun but I’m disappointed all the same. I was expecting it but still…

DADDY IS GONNA BEAT YOU UP

Yeah the reveal was so abrupt…nice twist to the whole doppleganger mythos though.

Braz was pretty cool in this episode, yeah. Poor Liz was totally played by him, though.

    The ending was so abrupt though ;____;
