Gakkougurashi! Episode 7 – A Letter

A Letter starts with Miki noting that there are a lot more zombies out now. She then sees an image of Kei reading poetry but it turns out to be Yuki struggling with classic literature. Yuki gets all worked up over the feelings of someone from 800 years ago being transmitted to them. Miki fondly offers to help her with the work and they read it over together.

That night, after the other two are in bed, Kurumi asks Yuuri if she ever wonders that this is all a dream and that they’ll wake up any moment in their normal lives. Yuuri’s response is that she dreams of it every night.

Yuki wakes up the next morning after a dream of Megumi telling her of the idea of a School Living Club. It’s clear that it’s shortly after the outbreak, back when Yuki was fully aware of what was happening. She tells Miki that she had a scary dream that she can’t remember.

At breakfast, it’s revealed that they’re rationing because the food they got from the mall is starting to run out. At Yuki’s prompting, they start reminiscing over the trip back. But their comments about seating – Yuki and Miki at the back, Yuuri and Kurumi at front – triggers some mild panic in Yuki as confusing images of Megumi flash in her mind. The others try to calm her down by saying that Megumi’s home was close to the mall and that she walked back but Yuki still runs off. She goes to the door we saw in the flashback, the place where they were forced to leave Megumi behind. She cries a lot until illusion!Megu-nee comforts her.

Back with the other girls, Miki says this can’t go on for longer even if Yuki’s smile is what keeps them all going. Kurumi agrees but Yuuri doesn’t seem too pleased. Yuki rejoins them soon after and is her cheerful self once more.

After messing around with Taroumaru and knocking over Megumi’s stuff, Yuki gets yet another idea. This time, it’s writing letters. Sending them is still a problem though. Kurumi suggests carrier pigeons while Yuki’s idea is to use balloons. Kurumi and Miki get helium from the old scuba club while Yuuri and Yuki write the letters. Yuki’s idea is to write about what they want to do after graduation. Oh and Kurumi actually manages to catch a pigeon.

So they all write the letters and that night, Miki hands over to Yuuri Megumi’s key that she had pocketed earlier in the day. Yuuri seems hopeful that all of them will be able to leave the school one day.

The next morning, they all send the letters and everything’s bright and hopeful.

The new ED, on the other hand, is not so bright and hopeful. It’s actually pretty ominous.

I don’t really have much to say this episode.

The idea of sending letter to the outside world is a nice one and the parallel to Yuki’s comments on the essay at the beginning is obvious. Even if the four of them die in that school, they’ve left behind something of themselves. I’m not sure if there’s any likelihood of someone finding the letters and coming to rescue them. I can’t predict anything in this show. Really, I have no clue how it will end.

Probably not like this…

As for Yuki, it seems like her delusions aren’t ironclad protections. They already seem to be fragile and it makes me wonder if all it would take is another push for them to shatter entirely. Then again, she can’t go on like this forever. Even if her smiles are the only bright things in the other three’s desolate lives, Yuki can’t go on living a lie forever. Sooner or later, it’ll come back to bite her in the butt. Though it will be interesting to see when and how she’ll face reality again and how it will affect not only her but also her companions. Their group dynamics is sure to undergo a drastic change when that happens.

Also, what the hell is that new ending theme? Already, the OP’s become grimmer (thanks for that, Remy) and now we have an ED that’s all gloom and doom. Are our girls in trouble? Probably.

I fear things will go downhill real soon. I don’t know why, but there were just too many signs for that in this episode. The number of zombies increasing, the food shortage. I would not be surprised if the school will get run over in some way very soon. I’m also beginning to believe that not every character is going to live through this.
It’s just the type of show for it….like you I have no idea how this is going to end either, but I would be surprised if it ended on a happy note. Wow…reading this back I think I just got infected by that gloom and doom mode too. Oh well…maybe I’m completely wrong…let’s hope so 😀

I have that fear too. The new ED in particular is very creepy. What even is that ending shot? It’d probably be realistic for not everyone to survive but damn, it’d still suck.

I jsut finsihed episode 8 and well. WELL. Let’s just say it’s taking Herculean self-control to not binge the rest. Give me strength 😐

Haha….well we both need to find that strength, since I have been struggling with that since starting with this series lol 😂😂 Well, hang in there, only 4 more episodes to go 😊😊

You have a metric ton of self control since you’re resisting the urge to binge. I applaud your determination.

The new ED really caught off guard. I was too busy focusing on the OP to the point that I failed to notice when the ED changed before I reached the last episode. Oops.

    Thanks again for the shout-out.

Blogging this is literally the only thing keeping me in check. Same with Another. But on the bright side, blogging these is also helping me savor the ride more than with past shows I’ve reviewed in this manner.

I usually let the ED play even when I don’t watch it which is why spotted the change. It kinda makes me worry for the girls. And the dog.

      No prob!
